I would like to add some doors to a simple book shelf. I wondered whether any member of the Hometalk community had undertaken such a project, and if so, whether they could be persuaded to post a tutorial on the subject.

I built these units from scratch. http://www.hometalk.com/diy/lori-s-bookcase-534184 The center unit has a pair of "inset" doors that hide another shelf inside. The key here is that the "frame" of the case needs to stick out beyond the shelves a bit to allow the doors to fit inside. Another possible option is to install doors like those on a kitchen "face frame" type cabinet where the doors sit "out side" of the opening and have some overlay to the face frame. This type of door is called an overlay...it can use 35mm cup hinges (face frame or frameless) or you can use "overlay" hinges http://www.thehardwarehut.com/images/blog/ame-bp3429-bb1.jpg

  @Valerie for "inset" I like to design for 1/8 " gap around and between the doors. Insets are much harder to build. Overlay doors can have from 3/8" to a full 3/4" overlay on the frame. The hinges you chose will dictate the level of overlay. Start there and design around them.
