You can measure out exactly what you need on paper, and Lowes or Home Depot (which ever you buy your lumber at) will cut it exactly like you need.
Use a circle saw with a straight edge to guide the cut.
When I started woodworking back in the 70's I used a hand saw. Sold a few things I made and bought a circular saw a few years later. As I got better I bought the tools I needed. Over time I amassed over $5,000 to $10,000 worth of tools.
I have a compound mitre saw. Cost me a hundred dollars at Sear's. It's lightweight and very portable. I rarely if ever need anything else. But if you don't want even that, then do the Lowe's thing. They are great about it.
I bought myself a small (4 1/2") circular saw. It does everything I need. Try it! You might like it! https://www.homedepot.com/p/Rockwell-4-1-2-in-5-Amp-Compact-Circular-Saw-RK3441K/204754147

William is right. One can carpenter with hand tools. That is basically the way they did it till the 20th century. Our living room bookcases are made of plywood and my husband made them except that I remember we took the long sides to a carpentry shop in town (sure miss that place!) to have the grooves for the shelves put in.) Also I had two bookshelves made on site by carpenters. The two bottom bookcases are almost ceiling high . They each cost $100, but that was years ago. Hard to believe though that it would be more than $200
