Can I just sand a tabletop, and refinish?

I acquired a table with some flawed spots on top, but rest is beautiful, and a very light finish. I would love to NOT feel like I need a table cloth on it๐Ÿ˜Š.

yes you can just do the table top, biggest problem would be trying to match the colour to the rest of the table; however it would probably look really nice if you had the top a deliberately different colour than the apron and legs...for example a walnut stain on top with clear oak legs.

You should be able to, if it is solid wood and not laminate. After sanding and wiping down with a tack cloth, you can apply a stain that should make it match the rest of the table. Stores have tiny samples of the stain colors. The important thing is to apply at least two coats of polyurethane to the top to prevent any more spots.
