any of the ideas above are good and easy but make sure your bench isn't too low (that does seem to be a problem) you can easily fix this if it occurs by add a cap to the top and botton the cinder block stacks.

I like all the ideas but I would paint the blocks. Even if you do it in a natural color. We painted our cement patio and it wears well and looks finished...good luck!
