You can cut pieces of plush carpet and place the carpet side so it is on the floor. That will work if you are moving heavy furniture across a wood/laminate/tile surface.

Hi Bernice. I recommend using upside down pieces of carpet to use as sliders. Some carpet stores will give away small pieces left over from prior jobs. Or even car mats would work too. Good luck Bernice.

    Hello Bernice,

If the floor is smooth and shiny - place a thick piece of carpet or a rug underneath the item to be moved (Pile side to the floor) and Pull/Push. If Carpet floor - use a smooth strong (Vinyl flooring/Tarpaulin / hard Plastic sheet) under the furniture and then slide it along (Pull/Push). Hope that helps!

Creating furniture sliders to move heavy white painted furniture can save you a lot of effort and protect your floors. Here are five tips on how to make them:

    1. Felt Pads: Purchase adhesive felt pads from a hardware store. Attach them to the bottom of your furniture legs or corners. Felt pads provide smooth movement and protect your floors from scratches.
    2. Old Towels or Blankets: Cut old towels or blankets into smaller pieces and place them under the furniture legs. These soft materials act as sliders, allowing you to slide heavy furniture with ease.
    3. Plastic or Styrofoam Plates: Use plastic or Styrofoam plates as makeshift sliders. Simply place them under the furniture legs, with the smooth side facing down. These materials reduce friction and help furniture glide smoothly.
    4. Tennis Balls: Cut a small slit into a tennis ball and insert the furniture leg into it. Tennis balls work well on hard floors and provide a smooth surface for moving heavy furniture.
    5. Reusable Furniture Sliders: Purchase reusable furniture sliders with a smooth, gliding surface and a cushioned bottom. These are specifically designed for moving heavy items and are available in various sizes.

Remember to lift one side of the furniture slightly to place the sliders underneath, and then gently push or pull the furniture to move it. Always prioritize safety and use proper lifting techniques when moving heavy items.

  • Small braided rugs or braided placemats work great.

Upside down carpet and yogurt lids work well, also we have had store bought ones, but then have them hanging around when the move was over.

    Hi Bernice, hope this helps.

To slide heavy items on hard floors like wood or tile, use a thick towel or rug with a soft side that will glide across the floor. For moving heavy items across carpet, use thick cardboard or, better yet, old Frisbees.

Hi Bernice: I have even gone so far as to put a sock over a cleaned out butter tubs, put the furniture legs into the tubs and then slid the couch or chair. Of course this won't work for a fridge or stove : - /

You need something heavy duty to handle the weight of the furniture, tennis balls would hold up to that challenge.

Hey All I found a new one!! I am not sure if these exist everywhere but where I live they now use these toppers for cans.

Step 1. Drink the Cans (optional).

Step 2. Cut the toppers into singles.

    Step 3. Lift a leg.

    Step 4. Move the "thing".

Good luck. Lift with your knees!

To move items on hard floors, use a heavy blanket to slide the items.

To move heavy items on carpeting, Use towels and cardboard: Try slipping something underneath your furniture's legs. Instead of lifting the piece to do this, rock your piece forward or backwards slightly to slide the material underneath the legs. The furniture will move easily across the room.
