Do you want additional storage or just a large prep area?
After finding your way on Pinterest with a finished design in mind go to local salvage, ebay or craigslist to find your basics. I live near a Habitat for Humanity and find things there.
I rarely build from scratch as it is easier and much cheaper to find a structure for an island and add things like a top of copper, salvage siding or industrial wheels.
What is your definition of cool, and would this island be permanent or able to be moved. Is there electricity already coming from the floor?
Get an old dresser, paint it to match your kitchen, tile the top.
you can easily build an island. You can buy cabinets anywhere to be the base. IKEA is a great place for quality, assemble yourself cabinets for the base. Plus they help you design the island taking all your requirements into the design. Think about how you are going to use the island, is it just food prep or will you have seating around the island. That will dictate the type of counter top you need. It's an additional expense but seriously think about adding electrical outlets to the island if you plan to use it for food prep. Good luck.
