Frequently check your local thrift stores and used furniture stores. Many times you can buy high quality furniture there very inexpensively.
As far as bunk beds, please, buy new mattresses. We have a bed bug epidemic in the US. They are horrible to get rid of if you bring them into your house.
How about milk crates or suitcases.
