I have the same problem; my almost-16-y.o. son is over 8" taller than me! He too has a loft bed and has been asking for a new bed. I'd suggest for you what we're doing with him: go for length rather than width. That means to ditch the full-size bed and go for a twin XL instead.
And look on the bright side--in five years he'll be off to college where all the dorms have twin XL mattresses, and you won't have to buy new sheets for him! :-D
Use probably 4x4's for the uprights to help keep things sturdy. I wouldn't use wood less than two inches wide, like 2x4's and 2x6's for the rest. There are extra long twin mattresses available for someone who may be real tall in the future. You may even be able to get a full extra long mattress made if you want more than a twin. Put in shelves on the sides, that will also add some strength to the frame and also give him plenty of storage for school supplies, toys, etc. Under the bed you can put in a chest of drawers and a desk for homework. If his room is large enough for another dresser or chest of drawers, he can use the chest of drawers for storing games, hobby supplies, whatever junk he wants to keep them off the floor. I hope this helps you Pam!
