How to build a stand alone murphy bed?
I live in a basement apartment and would like to add a murphy bed for guests . I cannot change the walls so a built-in is not possible. I was wondering about building a unit that looked like a bookcase or wardrobe. I would have to anchor it to the wall at top and bottom, but folded up would at least allow me more space. Thanks in advance

Hi. You can buy all the parts for a murphy bed online and install it in a bookcase. Make sure that if you use a knock down bookcase that you put half inch plywood on the back to add heft to the casing. Look up: BILLY Bookcases transform into Murphy Bed in Ikea hacks. This one's on wheels and spins around. Others have door fronts. Good luck.

Ocee, no advice this time. I was just remembering when everybody (it seemed like) had a rollaway bed. One of my grandmothers kept hers made up with clean sheets and a blanket and a pillow. Ladies sewed covers for the bed with patterns that looked like giant toaster covers. The mattress was full of cotton so it was heavy but comfortable. And the springs was part of the iron frame. Ready for a sleepover granddaughter or two, or a visiting preacher, or a sister who has come far. Just a bit of nostalgia! ☺️
Jewell, those memories are precious. Exactly what I am hoping to do.. create memories for my grands.
Thank you very much for sharing your thoughts. They are beautiful
