One way to mount a headboard to a wall is to use what is called a "french cleat". It is a board (could use a 2"x4"), then use a matching one on the back of your headboard. You then lower the headboard with the the board onto the cleat on the wall. The length of the cleats will depend on the width of your headboard. Do a lot of measuring before you mount the boards to ensure the headboard is the correct height on the wall.
Attach the bottom to the baseboard. If it is just a headboard attach two 1 x 3's to the back with screws so most of the weight is on the floor. You can attach the headboard to the bed frame at this point with long screws by using the 1 x 3's that will be hidden. The french cleat above is also a great option.

You will need to find the studs in the wall to mount it securely. Once you've found them, you can mount it with a bracket or screws that go directly into the studs.

Interlocking flush mount brackets can be found at your local hardware store and are easy to install. Since they are multipurpose hangers designed to keep objects flush with the wall, they are ideal for headboards, picture frames, mirrors, and other heavy-duty items.
Interlocking Z-clips is another excellent option. Much like flush mount brackets, Z-clips work with gravity to ensure that your headboard is tightly interlocked with the wall hardware.
If you are unable to locate studs in the wall, you may need to use toggle bolts, drywall anchors, or even employ the use of a French cleat. A French cleat is molding with a 30 – 45 degree slope used to hang heavy objects. The cleat is fastened to the wall, with the angle sloping up and out from the wall. This positioning will allow the corresponding mold to slide down and lock into the cleat.
Step One: Determine Where You Want Your Headboard on the Wall
Step Two: Measure for the Mounting Hardware
Step Three: Mount the Hangers
Step Four: Install the Mounting Brackets
Step Five: Hang Your Headboard

This is what we do. Lean headboard on wall then put mattress up against the headboard. No movement at all.
You will need to mount to the wall via the studs. Need a stud finder. Then just a drill and some long screws. Try to screw where they cant be seen
You can use a French cleat, keyhole brackets, or there are heavier duty brackets in the picture hanging aisle of your local home improvement store.
I actually found it easier to move the bed with the headboard mounted on the wall. And when vaccuming it is nice to make the process as easy as possible.
