  • As wide as you wish. There are no hard and fast files. There are skinny bookcases and there are large wide bookcases. Just depends on where you need or want them.

    Less wide than the wall...usually.

36 inches to 48 inches. But many compromise with 42 inches. Why? Measure your walls in your home, somewhere you very likely have a 46 inch area between a wall and a window. Most homes do. Why? This is the exact place the Architect who designed that Home Layout knew that he could not Replace that Wall with a Built-In Bookshelf, but needed to accomodate room suffice for an Add-on Shelf.

An architect will never design chaos to the home.

Cook Books belong in a kitchen.

    Magazines in a magazine rack.

Entertainment books in a Living Room or Man-Cave.

Thus, as Built-Ins increase Home Equity and removables do not, you should inspect your necessity and what resources you already have, to construct a Large Built In into a Wall.
