Collect pallets. Cut them apart. Stain some boards paint some boards. Then make a head board
Got any extra paint. Stencil or paint a headboard on the wall. You can always put something over it or paint over if you get tired of it. I think a headboard made with ceiling tins would also be a good idea.

For another option that I have done in the past -you could use a wooden door as a headboard. You could go to recycle habitat or thrift store maybe Craigslist and possibly find a wooden door to solve your headboard need.
Scroll to the top of this page. Click on the magnifying glass and type in headboard. Click the GO on the right. I got tired of counting after 36, but if you can't find inspiration from 36+ talented Hometalkers, you should stay with your platform/headboardless bed and do some more thinking. 😉 Show us your finished creation and take lits of pics along the way. Have fun exploring, Michele!

#37! I like Chubby's idea for stencils. You could even get window clings and wash them onto the wall with an Elmer's and water solution. Think fun, not permanent and it'll be easier to decide.
A headboard does not have to attach to the bed. Think of what you can put on the wall to give the impression of a headboard. This can be large posters, a flat bed sheet, a sheer curtain (possibly with twinkle lights) hung over curtain drawback hooks, or just paint the wall with stencils
