Small dressers or book cases screwed together back to back with a top of your choosing would work well.Just add baskets for draw space. If you wanted it to be moveable just add some casters. If you like a more modern look I have seen the big metal toolboxes on wheels used for an island as well.

If you screwed 2 4' dressers back to back you'd have a 48" island with drawers but it wouldn't be quite 30" wide. You can buy ready made countertops which would fit & just screw it to the top.

I would start with a nice piece of furniture that fit the dimensions. Them let my creative mind take over!

I made an island out of 2 kitchen cabinets. We meant to "splurge"(depending on one's life style, I suppose you can call it that :)). here is my post's link:http://www.hometalk.com/diy/kitchen-dining/kitchen-dining-furniture/splurge-alert-7742168

Check out the WOODEN WORK BENCH at Harbor Freight---this is a long wooden item with 4 drawers---and a nice sturdy shelf underneath; butcher block top. We assembled one (was easy) for our kitchen island a year ago and have been very pleased. A few minor things we did---added a strip of decorative small molding to back edge so things would not get pushed off; added dowels to the bench's holes that are pre-cut (for use as a work bench) the dowels just fill in those small holes -sanded and sealed the top; this is VERY sturdy; the drawers have felt lining already in them; and the whole thing costs around $130 (Don't forget their coupon!!!) Add in a few $$ for the poly and dowels and sand paper---we also added some IKEA wooden rack/shelves on the ends for small containers and might add a towel bar. Room under the shelf for storage too---I had an under bed type tote and stashed it under there for extra canned goods etc but you could leave it open or use baskets etc. If you needed more drawers--we don't have ANY drawers in our kitchen!--you could add a free standing unit on top of the shelf.

I used the bottom of an old Hoosier cabinet for years. It was on wheels, had a porcelain finished top, large cabinet and 3 drawers. Antique shops or consignment shops may have some.

A friend of mine bought stock cabinets at a big box store, put them back to back and then had a top installed. She bought dark stained cabinets and had a granite top installed. It is very pretty.

Just a suggestion..if you plan to do a lot of work there, Increase the depth by 12 to 15 inches.

I was inspired by an island I saw at Ikea. So..... I happened to stop at a garage sale one day and they had this awesome table that had 2 drawers in on one side. The top was a bit damaged and needed some fixing. So, DH took 1x6 boards and attached them to the top. One side is flush (the side that has the drawers) and the opposite side he let hang over about 12". This became the bar side for sitting at and eating. He stained and put many layers of clear coat on it and it turned out great! I went to another sale and found two barstools and they fit great at it. The entire thing was so cheap! Under $20 for the entire thing! Table = $5 Barstools = $12 Boards = 0 (we had them already) Stain= 0 (also had this)

I bought an old, and I mean old---but very sturdy cabinet type stereo that was 36 inches high and the right dimensions and repurposed it into a beautiful island for myself! I had to remove the old record player and radio as well as one speaker but I habe plenty of storage and this thing will last forever!

I just saw a Showhouse kitchen where they used an old dresser, painted it and then did a poured concrete countertop and inlaid it with faux marble tile. It came out very nice.
