I’m making the headboard for my bed ...materials include plywood,leather material, foam,glue and brass tacks or buttons....would it be better to use the buttons or the tacks

Either will work-it depends on what you'd like to see. It would also depend on the thickness of your foam. If you drilled holes to thread your buttons through the foam and wood the buttons would be more secure than the tacks. I would use your tufting needle and some heavy waxed thread to sew the buttons down through the foam to create a nice tufting. I mark the design on the backside of the plywood, then drill a hole just fine enough to get your needle through. Nailheads are for decoration, and single ones won't hold up over time.
