Decorating A Fall Window Box

I’m not sure I’ve ever had a window box before in all the many, many houses I’ve owned. It’s kind of fun but a lot of work!
I am the first to admit I do not in any way, shape or form have a green thumb. This can be a problem when it comes to remembering to water what I plant, as well as picking out what should even be planted in a window box to begin with. I got some great advice from my FB friends and stopped by Home Depot one day to gather up the goods.
his is what $87.00 will get you in two small boxes. Eeks! I only bought 1 bag of potting soil, the rest I dug up from our existing flower bed. I just looked for some high spots, grabbed some dirt and then smoothed it back out. Our yard is taken care of by the Homeowners Association for our neighborhood so I don’t want to be the one to mess things up!
My #1 goal was to get some of that beautiful Ornamental Cabbage/Kale. This was the only plant Home Depot had that was on my list. So I did the best I could with everything else. I kept all the little tags so I could tell you what I got. Again, remember I am NOT a gardener!

1. Creeping Myrtle

2. Boxwood Shrubs (hoping to transplant these later)

3. Blue Fescue ‘Boulder Bue’ (thought it would look pretty with the Kale)

4.Viola (for a punch of color)
The black cat, pumpkins, moss twigs and acorn sphere are all items I already had stored from previous years.
There are actually three different planting sections to this window box with wood dividers. It makes it a kinda tricky when trying to make it look like one continuous space.
I also added a few Fall touches to our front porch.
The filler in the lanterns came from Pier 1 during their 30% off sale. Hubby and I had a good time shopping. Can you see the gold antler in there? I picked up 3 of them and they are my favorite find!
Source for Shallow Wire Basket is on my blog.
I actually couldn’t leave the white pumpkins out for long. They were painted with chalk paint and I’d be in BIG trouble if it rained. Michael’s Craft Store had their pumpkins on sale (60% off) so I went down and got a few. The white pumpkins are now sitting next to the lanterns safe and sound under the covered front patio.

It was fun putting it all together but taking care of it is a whooooooooole other ballgame. I’m hoping I can keep everything alive through the season. Wish me luck! I’m glad Christmas comes next. I’m planning on using Christmas balls, fake pine trees, etc…easy on the budget and I don’t have to worry about keeping anything alive. This is stressful. Haha!
