Winter, or can I just remove part of the top layer?
Hi yes you can leave in pot over winter. .cut them back .I grow flowers in pots and they keep coming back each year. .I have to keep close to home or deer will eat them. .I have had Hosta in a pot for three years. .summer phlox in pot. .just cut them back they will come back in spring. .Merry Christmas .
If you have a storage shed, put them in it.
I'd give them a good layer of mulch and water sparingly. Or, if you have a garage or shed, move them in there.
I would set them on the south side of a building against the foundation, and thickly pile leaves around the pots to insulate them.
