If it was a marine type varnish or urethane it will last a lot longer, the marine type is made for the outside weather, heat and rain. I did a set of steps we replaced with marine poly and it is on its fourth season and still looks new. The steps are used all the time by the four dogs to go in and out the door to the back yard.
Varnish has a yellow cast to it and yellows over time. Eventually will crack and flake off. Use a spray clear lacquer or Helmsman spar Urethane.
The finish should hold up if it is an exterior sealer. I bring in my decorative flower clay in the winter or the freeze tends to crack them.
Hi Erana, this link shows you how to paint and seal with acrylic, okay outdoors but not for the cold of winter
