I’ve been wanting to create a wall planter for the back of our garage, but decided I wanted to use recycled materials because I like the challenge. After playing around in the garage, I came up with this idea, and it only took me one afternoon! I used extra vinyl from our deck railings and a wooden dowel, but even if you had to buy supplies, it would still be a pretty cheap project.

What I used:

Leftover vinyl from our deck railings

Wooden dowel

Alligator curtain clips

Screws

Flat corner bracket

siding clips

Step 1: Drill holes in vinyl

After measuring and planning, I drilled holes in my vinyl pieces for my wooden dowels. I used a drill bit that corresponded with my dowel size (1/2 in), but I predrilled smaller holes first, to make it a bit easier. Make sure the holes are evenly spaced.

Step 2: Add wooden dowels

Next I cut my wooden dowels and stuck them into each hole. It was a pretty tight fit so I didn’t need glue or anything to keep them in there!

Step 3: Frame it out (optional)

After getting to this point, I decided I wanted to add a top and bottom piece of vinyl to make it look more finished. I cut two more pieces of vinyl, and mitered all of the corners, then attached them together using these flat corner brackets

Step 4: Add clips

Next, I used small screws to attach leftover curtain clips to the wooden dowels. This will allow me to attach and detach the pots whenever I need to. You can get these clips on Amazon, or even use hooks!

Step 4: Hang

I drilled two holes in the back of the vinyl, and attached used these siding clips to hang it on the house. These can also be purchased off of Amazon, and are great because they’re cheap, and because you don’t need to drill into your house!

After hanging it up, I filled some old plastic pots with plants from the yard, and clipped them to my dowels! This was a simple project, but I’m so happy with how it turned out.

Very clever use of materials on hand. However, are you not concerned about the water that drains out of your pots staining your siding?
