After my existing brick sidewalk is torn out, what's next ?

The old sidewalk was never right and I want to make it right using the same bricks but need some advice on how to work the sub layers of the project. I want the bricks to be grade level when complete. How deep should I dig and lay rocks and sand to make the sidewalk stable ?
