I just made a garden with a picket fence. Down the center I want a walking path. I'm thinking mulch with stepping stones. What's the best method to achieve this without getting standing water? What's the best type of mulch to use?

I love the idea of stepping stones in the center. You can buy landscape edging on either side of your path or perhaps rail road ties on either side to create a boarder that will keep the water away from your walkway. Place your step stones in the middle and mulch, rock, or gravel around the stones.

if you go with stepping stones make sure you get them as level as possible otherwise you will get Water under them and you will end up with a muddy walkway

Go with woodchips. They will be free if you can find a landscaper who is chipping in your neighborhood. Wood chips feed the soil as they decompose over time and create better garden soil all around.

I would go with washed rock and larger stepping stones that way you will have good drainage

I bought and used the small white pebbles in mind with the garden edging along the sides. We went to a sand and gravel company and bought it by the truck bed full, and it was very reasonable; much cheaper than buying individual bags. We started out with line bark, but it started out washing away. Love the gravel. I can even use blower to clean it off.

Thanks to everyone with great ideas! I finished my garden fence and put a few decorative light up stepping stones out . And solar light post caps. I used pine bark mulch for the pathway. I add have yet to put the stepping stones on the inside of garden, I'm thinking the natural looking stones.
