For a freestanding carport, anchor large posts in the ground at the four corners. Use cement to anchor them firmly and securely. Then, build a simple framework using 2x6s. Make sure to space the boards 16" apart to insure they will be sturdy enough. Raise the framework onto the posts, and attach with lag bolts, nails, etc to support the framework. Next, use plywood to cover the framework, then cover it with corrugated plastic or metal roofing...or use typical asphalt shingles if you prefer.
