Hi Sandy! Hubby and I went a pretty easy way. We dug about two and a half feet down and as wide as we wanted it. We lined it with cement and put a hole in the center bottom for drainage. We used some pavers about six inches high around the top edges a few inches from the edge. We made ours deep because we also burn the branches frequently that come down from all the mature trees around us. This has worked very well for us. We also added a BBQ grill that we found at Menards, it is on a metal pole and has a holder that we put in the cement when we did that part. We keep the grill in the garage until we need it, it works well also and you can turn it out of the fire pit when you are done with it to cool before it is put away until the next time. I hope this helps you. We did this over about four hours, so was simple, fairly quick to do, the longest wait was making sure the cement was dry and cured before it was used.
