Just buy a Bamboo shade when those are on Sale. It costs much much less than any DIY solution.

We purchased a pergola, but you can also build your own. Ours came with a 'screen' over it and it blocks a lot of the harsh sunlight on our patio.

I think I will try the bamboo shades, they come in a variety of widths and lengths and they are inexpensive, thanks.
