How to cut a 28" diameter log into a 3"piece?

I have a 16" chain saw that I bought used. I am abit intimidated to use it on such a thick log. Do I need a longer chain and blade or will this work? This will be the 1st time I use the chainsaw Thanks, Katherine

Don't do it, get help. Be careful, chain saw too small.

Thanks Kellie. I was worried! I'll get someone else to cut it. Thanks Kat

Might sound odd but I use a sawzall for everything! Trim trees, daily. It’s, Great because it’s runs on a battery so no problems starting. Different blades do different things. The wider space in between the teeth is great for cutting “logs” too. Chainsaws, are dangerous. And deadly. If you do get it started, there’s still so much that can go wrong. Especially, reducing down to such a small size. You’ll need a table vice to hold it. It’s gotta be off the ground. Watch for kick backs, pinching , etc. another person needs to be there to keep an eye on the project as you work it. I’d try the sawzall or reciprocating saw. It’s user friendly, can go anywhere, the blades flexible so you can get in tight places and you’ll find a zillion ways to use it. I love it 😍

Katherine, 16 + 16 = 32. I would draw or tape a line around the log and cut from side to side along the tape line. Line your blade up with the tape line on the top and hold it at the same angle as you follow the line down to the bottom of the log. Then I would go to the other side of the log and repeat. The tip of your blade should overlap the center of the log by 4". You may need to use a plane or sander to smooth out the cut line. Good Luck.

I like your answer. I am going to speak with a friend of mine who I know has a chain saw and ask him to supervise. Thanks, Kat

This should be a relatively straight forward task to accomplish; simply use an electric chainsaw as it cuts at a much slower chainsaw chain speed so their is much less chance of potential inadvertent chainsaw chain kickback.

The electric chainsaw also is much lighter and easier to handle overall so it is much safer to use also as well when cutting into such a large diameter tree log.

Let the electric chainsaw chain do the cutting do not press the electric chainsaw into the tree log with more than two pounds of pressure; as the electric chainsaw will slowly but surely inch by inch be slowly cut through over time.

Make sure that one keeps the chain and bar lubricant oil reservoir on ones electric chainsaw is kept full at all times and do not use motor oil and only bar and chain oil as only bar and chain oil does not sling off as that keeps one's electric chainsaw chain cool and effectively and productively cutting at all times.

Make some practice cuts into the log so that one gets to experience how the electric chainsaw handles when cutting into a particular large diameter tree log; make sure the electric chainsaw chain itself is kept tight under tension at all times to ensure efficient and safe chainsaw chain cutting and handling.

Measure out three minute time chainsaw chain tree log cutting time intervals so that one can pause and check if the electric chainsaw has not clogged up with excessive tree log chips from underneath the chainsaw chain side access cover to ensure that ones tree log cutting is efficient and productive and as safe as potentially possible also as well.

Wear extra thick and sturdy leather cow hide gloves for extra protection from potential prolonged vibration of electric chainsaw and make sure to roll log to cut gradually and progressively through the tree log from all available potential sides that can be accessed as this will help ensure an even and efficient cut through and make sure to take ones time as their is no rush at all.

The electric chainsaw will eventually cut through the the twenty eight inch diameter tree log if one is very patient and methodical in the previously outlined tree log cutting tips and techniques if one does not rush and takes the time needed for the electric chainsaw chain to slowly but surely cut through the large diameter tree log.
