How to enhance the blankness of underneath of wisteria arbor?

I took this photo from the upstairs of our house but it does show the relative newness of the fence backing this space beneath the wisteria arbor. In time this will darken but since it is now the focus (esp as seen from back yard) it seems boring. We have a patio (to the right) under a grape arbor, so don't need seating. Barely visible in photo is an angel over a small fountain/pond. I've been wracking my brain. Any good ideas? width of space is maybe 8 to 10 feet, depth of ground about 4 feet. Soil very stoney and root bound.

Hang something whimsical on the fence! You can make a dragonfly out of an old table leg and some ceiling fan blades (painted pretty), hang an old pallet and plant it with shade loving plants, mirrors, interesting metal salvage pieces etc.

I've seen on Pinterest where you hinge two or 3 old doors together. You could place them behind your angel. Add hooks and hang plants on it. Make sure to. Put metal rods behind it to make it sturdy. I would love to see what you end up doing.

you could always stain the fence with an aqua deck stain to complement your arbor!

You could try a bird bath and a bird feeder, use the bird bath as a bird feeder, or several pots of different hostas, so the area doesn't look so incomplete

Hang a bunch of mirrors (or one large one) in interesting frames. Mirrors will look interesting and reflect the greenery in the rest of the yard.

You could paint a mural/motif on the fence, or hang something there. Even a really large framed print (think outside the box, this is another 'room' in your home). Just be sure the frame is weather proofed and the the seal tight around whatever covers the picture. If there are kids in the yard, I wouldn't use real glass over the print, but rather plexi or have the print laminated to weather-proof it.

p.s. I love the mirror idea, too. A mosaic from broken mirrors would be really neat.

How about making the area under the plant a sitting area. Use broken tiles or cement to make an interesting "floor", maybe grow a "low ground cover" in the openings of the "floor". Perhaps place a relaxing bench or a couple of chairs & table in that area.

Add more of that, turquoise paneling! Continue the flow ! Add the mirror on top of that, or garden wall art, as in metal butterflies,DIY glass plate flowers, hubcap flowers...

Hi! I know your struggles! I'm never all the way satisfied with my back planter.

How about trying to make some tufa concrete shapes and placing them there?

Check out Pinterest for Tuffa concrete ideas. Also, since the ground is rocky, etc.

i would put a large pot with annuals in it opposite any concrete Shapes.

Or if you did smaller concrete shapes you could do a grouping of 3 pots.

    Best Wishes!

I thank you all for sharing your ideas. They are great. At one time I did have a mirror on this back fence but it scared people (LOL) When I wrote this I forgot t hat we had planted 3 hostas back there (they are still small) I also asked my DH if I could do the paint job and he has no objection. We have a long mural on a side fence so, hesitate to repeat that.. I also like the bird bath idea but we have two already in this small yard. I have some Boston ivy on another fence on driveway and I love that but the wisteria and ivy may go to battle! I really love a wall of mirrors and I do have quite a few. I may try that first as it would be pretty easy to just hang them. I also have quite a bit of plexiglass (we have a great transfer station) and I could maybe glue some large floral prints onto that and just hang them with those clips. I may try the combination; prints/mirrors as there is a division. Thank you all so much! I also like the door idea, we get a lot of doors at dump, but Maine winters are harsh and stability would be an issue even in summer. . . however they sure would come in handy when I have a yard sale! Thank you all again!

If you have dogs make sure they don't chew on the Wisteria it is poisonous. I didn't know that and lost one of my Pommies to it. I love the look of what you have done and you gotten some great ideas.
