I want to create a spot that’s sturdy for a grill in my backyard. So if not cement what else can I do
Level and area out in your yard , away from trees. Buy some pavers and paver sand or patio stones. Make a boarder from wood that's treated or use smaller brick type pavers. Level the sand in the area then put down the pavers etc..then fill with that elastomeric sand that fills in the cracks.
We just did this in the Fall actually.
Our planned cement slab was on a slope so we actually had to build a retaining wall to allow for the concrete.
I have 3 posts associated with a patio on a slope where we prepared for the cement slab and We DIY'd the whole thing. I have ALL details in these posts starting it from scratch!!!

You can use large slate and lay them in a square form
Or use concrete stepping stones that run about $1 each or less on sale. Labor Day weekend is rapidly approaching, they will be on sale soon at any home improvement center.
We used concrete and a mold to make our patio: https://www.charlestoncrafted.com/make-quikrete-walkmaker-patio/
