I am 75, have a steep driveway,need steps & a railing-where to start?
Someone is going to help me build the steps out of natural rocks and install a wrought iron railing. I am attaching pictures of the driveway. Do we start at the top or bottom? I have heard both. What is the equipment needed to tamp down the soil before placing the stone? Once the step is in place and level, how is the rock secured?

Start at the bottom building the steps. A hand tamper to tamp the soil for the stones steps. A bed of concrete where the step will go will hold it in place. The weight of the stone would be enough to keep it in place but the concrete will prevent it from shifting.

I went through several videos and they all started at the bottom. I hope this film helps you, if not, come back and we'll see what we can do. Good luck.
