Our home is built on a little hill to make is so when we get the summer rains, water does not enter the home. We are starting to get erosion, so I would like to build a retaining wall in the front. I just don't know how to. If anyone has experience and could give me instructions, it would be great. Thank you.

Before building the wall, take special note of where the erosion is happening. If it’s under the gutters, do they need cleaning, causing overflow?

Consider inexpensive downspout extenders and direct them towards your slope. Many of them only extend when there’s water, then can be rolled back up if they look unsightly.

I guess I’m suggesting you find a simple cause of the erosion before all that work, because a retaining wall can keep the water close to the house rather than training it to flow away.

So consider building your walls with drainage holes at the bottom. Maybe even use sand or stone (like mini French drains) behind them to encourage gentle water flow to the next lower level.

At the top left of this page is our Project Search box. Type in Retention Wall. There’s lot of great practical advice and instruction.
