I want to build a privacy fence for my backyard.

I want this fence to be parallel to the back of my garage and the side of my house. These two fencing runs will meet at a 90 degree corner. How can I make sure that they are parallel to the buildings and square at the corner?

Proper preparation will be key. Use a string line that is exactly what you want then you can spray paint the ground to ensure you follow the plan and stay parallel / square.
here is a section of fencing that ends on one side and meets the fencing along the back of our yard. I just took the lower picture to show where the back fence and the side fence meet. My husband fastened the new side fence to the old back fence and then after that new tenants behind us added a new section of higher fence. We have many roots from two big maples so while my husband is a skilled carpenter, I don't know if you were in the sky looking down if you would see an exact 90º angle. However that would have been the intention and as the fencing on our right side was installed by that neighbor (who hired professionals) and meets that same back fence, I'm sure the same effort was intended there. The short answer is to put in a fence post and make careful calculations.
