    The best suggestion I can give you .. is to do some research.... to start... make a visit to a specialty wood working store.... most of the folks there will willingly answer your questions..... or sign up for a basic wood working class.... maybe at the local community college... you might even find one online... your local library may also have books that can give you good basic information too

    It really depends on the project. Some woods are hard-such as oak and maple. You can also get plywood that has a veneer over one or both sides. Some wood is good for outdoors-exterior plywood, cedar. Pine is a soft wood and easy to work with. However, it is easily dented and often has many knots. Hardwood is more expensive than pine or fir. There are also manmade products like plywood, such as mdf that is meant to be painted. A store that sells lumber can help you decide which is best for your project.
