What's the easiest, cheapest way to make a small patio?

I'd like to fix a space off my very small front porch for sitting during the hot summer weeks. The sun doesn't hit there until early evening. It's full sun on the back porch until late afternoon. I don't want it to look tacky, as it can be seen from the road. I don't want to spend much on the project, though, and I may be doing it by myself (small woman). Ideas??

You might edge the area with lawn edging and fill the patio area with bark or pea gravel. If you want a solid surface I would get a couple panels of compressed wood, paint or seal it well, secure the seams with a board and lay it (boards underneath) over a grid of bricks or paving stones to keep it off the ground and preserve the wood for as long as possible. Remember to do both sides of the boards.
