If you both have back problems, you should consider a pro. You need to excavate area, level, base layer of gravel, packed, landscape fabric, gas powered tamper for gravel, then brick or pavers for patio, polymeric sand and vibrator to settle it before spraying with water. FIre brick for fire pit on a base of sand. It's heavy work, and time consuming, particularly for those with back problems.
Yes. Trying to do a patio with a fire pit is going to be extremely hard on your backs. I would also recommend hiring a pro. They will have it done for you much faster than you will be able to do it and it won't be your back that's sore.
