Pay attention to height too. My contractor placed height spacing in an unsatisfactory pos—whereas my shirts and sweaters touch the ground.

Hi Connie
The shelves need to be as deep as you need them to be, and still close the doors!
They should be at least 24 inches deep.
24 inches deep
Some Important Numbers to Keep in Mind
A clothes closet should have a minimum depth of at least 24 inches deep, so the clothes can clear the back wall. Shelves for women's shoes should be spaced about 6 to 7 inches apart. Shelves for folded clothes should be placed around 12 inches apart.
Hi Connie, the answer will vary depending on the design of your closet. Shelves can vary in width, my shelves go all around my walk-in closet and they are 12" deep. The shelves are above and below two sets of rods for clothes hanging. So, it's variable, your closet may be able to have 18, 20, or 24" deep shelves. Here's some inspiration......

Most typical closet shelving is 24 inches deep but it all depends on the depth of your closet and what you plan on storing on the shelves. Shallower shelves will still work for things like shoes etc. Is it a clothing closet or for long term storage? If its long term you may want to purchase the bins and / or boxes first and then build the shelving to accommodate.

Hi Connie. When I installed shelves in my closet, I purchased the bins first. I measured the bins and put the shelving deep enough to accommodate them. Also, Connie, when you shop for the lumber, take your closet measurements with you. Most home improvement stores will cut the lumber for free as long as you buy it there. Home Depot cut mine for free. Good luck Connie and Happy New Year.

As deep as possible to maximize storage space.
Normally they're 12" but you can custom make anything that will fit your closet and storage situation better.

What ever size you want them to be. That is the joy of building your own.
