I've done that....there are a few ways depending on how much wt. they need to hold. you can get rails that have openings and brackets attach. the brackets support a wood shelf. you can repurpose a bookcase.
you can add a small shelf between the uprights in the garage most are 4 inches deep, motor oil, bug spray canned lubes usually fit there.
if you want deeper shelves you will need to brace them using 4x4 to support the front edge and a straight board to screw the back edge into.
