How can I make nice shelving for our clothes without using a dresser?

My bedroom is so small that with furniture and a bed, there is no room to move. I want to create open shelving to take the place of dresser and chest, having bed and a small table as my only pieces of furniture. I would like shelving to cover at least 2 walls from ceiling to floor. Any ideas on making this look good?

I would either use pretty matching baskets or get one of those folding systems so that you can stack the clothes to look like a department store display. Perhaps roll them, which would give you more room (at least it does for towels).

Would you consider adding doors to shelves? I would think it's going to be a lot of work to keep it neat if you go with open shelves with no baskets/bins.

Rita: Home Depot (and Target) have a number of configurations of cube storage units. (You could also get smaller ones to use as side tables for your bed.)

Any home improvement center or lumber yard has pre cut shelving in a variety of lengths and widths. You can paint or stain to coordinate with your decor. They also have a decent selection of brackets from inexpensive and utilitarian to decorative. I would suggest using baskets of some sort so your clothes are less dusty and less chance of fading. Rolling your items can easily save space. Here is how to install shelves properly.

You might take a trip to IKEA, they have lots of cleaver designs for small spaces.

It's not exactly what you asked for, but have you thought of using a clothing rack that you could hang your clothes on? It wouldn't take up a lot of space, and it would keep your clothes from getting wrinkled, which they probably would if you kept them in bins.

I would put either the fabric cubes in one color to hold you stuff, or get the baskets. Dollar Tree has fabric cubes in 3 colors.... Ikea has the basket cubes. You could add shelving using either the floating shelves or use the metal tracks that hold brackets to place the shelves on..... True Value Hardware has this type of shelving in white and wood tone.

Personally I have a tall, wide metal bookcase in my spare room to organize stuff in the small room.
