If you are doing natural wood, I would match them. If crown is painted, and the baseboards can remain the same or be painted to match the crown.
I have seen the DIY guys do it all the time... especially in vintage homes... most houses have white or painted baseboards... because it is a cheaper wood or composite.
I wouldn't mix wood unless I planned to paint them both. Otherwise I'd use the same wood on both the crown molding and the baseboards.
