It won't stay because the pop corn is uneven.you could freshen it up with paint get a stucco roller head it is really fuzzy it works great and paint it maybe add some sparkle to it.
Yes, it can be done, however you'll probably still need to go over the ceiling with a scraper to even out the popcorn so you can get the paneling to adhere in a level manner. Just go over the popcorn lightly to knock down the largest pieces. Messy, but necessary, depending on your popcorn.
My daughter had her ceiling in her bathroom covered. They used the the planks but I have seen beadboard in old houses with that on the ceiling....obviously it lasts!
Popcorn is easily removed if you spray with water and scrape off. Time consuming but effective.
My girlfriend did it with breadboard. Just found studs & nailed up. Never scraped anything, went up tight, just a neck breaker trying to do it. Her hubby even made a jig to help hold boards up while nailing. Looks phenomenal tho.
