Yes, mix a little vinegar with baking soda to make a paste. Add the vinegar a little at a time. It will bubble up so don't be alarmed, that's what it is supposed to do.
You can use one or the other, but mixing baking soda and vinegar actually neutralizes the cleaning potency of BOTH chemicals. I find that heat is the absolute best grill cleaner. Get it nice and hot and scrub with a grill brush. This method turns grease and food into ash which is a good cleaner itself. If you still have residue, I use Dawn dish soap after it has cooled.
