have you tried to heat the iron to hi heat and ironed news print? what ever melted could come off.
Walmart sells an Iron Cleaner, also sprinkle PLAIN table salt on an old towel, heat iron to hottest setting, iron salt! Won't scratch the place but should remove the Melty!

Salt works best to clean an iron . Turn it on wad up an old rag and rub regular table salt all over the bottom of the iron. You may have to dampen it a little bit but I'd be surprised if this didn't work .
Set iron on high and use the iron on a paper bag. The paper will absorb whatever is melted on it. Then clean with a Mr. Clean magic eraser.
I've used spray pam and very fine 000 steel wool, then run over a piece of waxed paper when clean.
