I use mine in the summer just about every single day! When done grilling, I turn up the heat and blast it for a few minutes at 500+ turns any residue to dust and easier to clean once cooled down.
we use a charcoal grill so we use a stiff wire brush we find at HOme Depot or even Walmart in the garden/grilling area. Or you can use a large piece of aluminum foil balled up to clean it as well..
the same way i clean my oven grates- oven cleaner sprayed on, put in black plastic bag tie it shut. leave out in the hot sun and over night. next day, rinse with hose.

Stick the grates in the dish washer.... also a hand held steam cleaner works too
