I use rubbing alcohol. Only do this on a cool iron.

I wrap a paper towel around the cool heating element. The part that holds the hair on will keep the towel in place. Thoroughly wet towel with white vinegar. Let it set for 30 minutes. Remove paper towel. Using a kitchen scrubber like scotchbrite clean the hair spray off the heating rod. Wipe clean with wet wash cloth. Dry. If some stubborn spots remain, repeat entire process again.

Unplug and let the iron cool completely. Then wipe with rubbing alcohol. You'll be able to tell when the residue is gone. Wipe agsin with warm water and dry with a soft cloth.

Dampen your finger with water and scrub it with baking soda. DO NOT immerse in water to rinse. Clean off with a damp cloth with rinsing in between wipes. The Baking soda will not scratch the surface of the barrel, hence using your finger to scrub with.
