If the machine is a top loader, keep the lid up, if a front loader then dry the area where the drain is when you are done using it. To do that, gently pull back the soft plastic gasket and dry the area. I have also found that leaving the slotted part where you add detergent...etc, keep that pulled out. It sounds ugly and clunky but it works.

I use a cup of vinegar and bicard inside the drum on a hot wash, machine is empty.

White vinegar works wonders. I use a cup or two and run the wash cycle.
