What is the best and most effective way to clean the grates on my gas cooktop? I believe they are cast iron.

I have cast iron grates on my gas stove, too. I readjust the racks in my dishwasher and run them through a normal cycle. Works well for me. If you don’t have a dishwasher, soak them for maybe half an hour in your sink with Dawn (or any other good brand) of dish soap, then scrub. Pat dry and reinstall on your stove.

Ran mine thru the pot scrub setting on my dishwasher and couldn't believe how good they look now!! Had planned to sand them down and paint with high heat paint but now don't have to!! Fast and easy😎

Put warm water and a little Dawn dishwashing soap in your sink, deep enough to cover the grates. Drop a Bounce fabric softener dryer sheet in with them. Let it sit for about 2 hours and just wipe off anything left on them. I usually did this at night and left all night while I slept. This also worked on my barbeque grill grates. I put them in the bath tub, next morning grates were really clean.
