How do I clean soiled and rusted solid stove plates?

Our tenants moved out and left a dirty stove with rusted and soiled solid stove plates as well as a greasy oven. How should I clean these plates without causing further harm?

    Replace the burner pans. They aren’t too expensive. You might consider spray painting them with black BBQ paint. Heat proof.

      Thank you, Cathy. These are solid plates, are expensive in South Africa and can only be replaced by a qualified electrician..... almost as costly as a new stove!

    Mix 3 parts baking soda to 1 part water or white vinegar and apply the paste to the rust spots. Allow it to sit for 20 minutes. Scrub the rust spots with a scrubbing sponge or old toothbrush to loosen and remove any remaining rust stains. Rinse the burners and examine them for rust.

    Throw drip pans away . very cheap to replace. Use oven cleaner for inside.

    You could try Barkeepers friend. Brillo Soap Pad. etc.
