Vinegar?
Hello. I frequently use the commercial AFFRESH tablets in my top loading HE washing machine. It’s an effective method to keep the drum clean free of odors or residual coating.
Additionally heres a diy treatment if you don’t wish to go with the commercial product route.

Do a cycle with vinegar or bleach. I typically use Affresh tablet as needed.
Hi Margiekory,
This is pretty common with front loading washers. It usually stems from mold that grows under the seal on the door. That's the part that you'll need to clean with vinegar and water. If you need to "scrub" it a bit, use a paste of baking soda and water. That will also help with the smell. Wishing you the best.
Check your washer for a self clean option. I didn't even realize mine had one for a long time but then I found it and it is supposed to be done once a month. If there is no self clean setting, then use an Affresh tablet.
Baking soda! Lowe's also sells a cleaner for those types of washers!
Ugh! My front load washer gets this all the time. Wipe off the door seals with a vinegar solution and leave the door open when not in use (I swear it's the only door in the house my husband closes). :)
This is a great step-by step article on how to clean your washing machine and get the stinky smells out - regardless of whether it's HE, top or front loading. Hope this helps and happy laundry day! Hugs, Holly

Pour white vinegar into the soap dispenser and run a full cycle empty.
