Naval Jelly can "kill" the rust. You have to get all of it or it will come back. Then, look for Rustoleum to paint over it.
Sand the rust off and paint with appliance spray enamel.
I would suggest to sand down the rust and apply some of this Rustoleum appliance epoxy touch up paint. It is a nail polish type applicator dispenser. I think there are other colors other than white available also. It’s only a few dollars —I got mine White bottle at Walmart. It’s effectively covered my second home refrigerator rust spots.
I second the epoxt touch up, or Rustoleum also makes appliance spray paint if it needs a large amount of painting.
Naval jelly will eat the rust. You might still want to sand it lightly. Then apply rustoleum Appliance touch up or spray the whole thing with Rust-Oleum spray paint.
I agree with the above suggestion & was going to suggest sanding the rust off & applying the white appliance epoxy paint also! Works great & very easy to apply & blend with the original paint! Never had any rust or scratches to return! Good luck with repairing your fridge!
Wipe over with WD-40 and Paint over to seal.
