What is the best way to clean the grates on my stove?

Hello Kim, I am assuming you are talking about the removable iron grates on a gas stove? For mine, I place each one in a a heavy duty gallon sized plastic ziplock bag (actually have THAT bag inside another one). Into the bag containing the grates pour some ammonia, about 1/4-1/3 cup, and zip seal BOTH bags gently squeezing out as much air as possible while zipping shut. Leave overnight for the fumes to work (I would have them either in the empty sink, or outside). After 6-8 hours you will be able to open the bags to remove grates, and save the ammonia to use again, or let it go down the drain to melt away any grease and debris that might be in the pipes. You will be able to use your sponge with hot soapy water to wash the grates clean (and take the horribly strong odor off them from the ammonia). Please breathe carefully when pouring the ammonia into the bags because the fumes CAN burn your lungs and eyes. Try keeping your head sort of sideways while you pour it in (or out of) the bags. It will work like a charm to clean up those grates, though, and it's great to know it only needs to be done a few times a year and not weekly ;) Good luck, and thanks for asking Hometalk for answers.

If it is a gas stove, you can put them in the dishwasher. That is what my manual said when I got a gas stove with grates on it.

I put our stove grates in the dishwasher about once a week. When I have extra room in my dishwasher I fill that space with my grates. Other items I put in the dishwasher include my sink stopper, kitchen sponge, and the removable shelves inside my refrigerator doors. I hope this info helps you.

I have a self cleaning oven but it doesn't do the job. Take the grates & put them in your laundry tub. Use SOS pads, then put a clean hot wet towel on the grate & soak for several hours. Rinse and they should be sparkling clean.
