Clean or replace this caulking?
This bathroom hasn't been used in a long time other than to wash out paint trays, brushes and rollers in the tub. But I'll be having guests in the early spring so am needing to make things look nicer. How can I know whether to try to clean this caulking or replace it? I'll do the job myself.

Added a new tile shower and the caulking seems to look dirty. It is soft so cleaning seems to take the caulking off. Any help is welcome.
I would attempt to clean it first and then see what you have under that mildew.

Try cleaning it first. Replacing caulk is a much bigger job - best to avoid if you don’t have to!
Clean it by spraying vinegar all over it. Let it sit for about a hour and wipe it. If it's still looking moldy, remove and replace it. Good luck! I hope the vinegar works.
Cleaning it would be the easier job. I'd definitely try that first!
I agree. Looks like it's in good condition just dirty. Vinegar and a scrub brush. Maybe even an old toothbrush. Then you can see if it needs replacing. Vinegar kills mold spores.
William is right, vinegar will kill the mold spores, I would start there. Clean it well with the vinegar, also wear a mask, the spores are in the air and are alive so protect yourself.
you can clean it and use Clorox Cleanup to get the mold/mildew off it will need a good scrubbing with a stiff brush
If you're having guests over, I would clean it... especially with the approaching holidays, you're going to find yourself busy with other things to do! Here is how to clean it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Yxp4psLEkc&t=31s
I would try cleaning it and if that didn't work, scrape it out and re-caulk.
You can clean with vinegar or gel toilet bowl cleaner. If that does not work get Silicone caulking for tub and bath and replace.
I would totally replace that.
You might try cleaning it before tacking the more time consuming replacement job.
By the looks of it I'm not sure it will come clean, but I always try the lesser of two jobs first. Trying to clean it wouldn't hurt, and if it doesn't work remove and replace.
I would spend the money to replace it. It’s easy to do. Removal tool is cheap, under $10.
A tip on the caulk, my husband doesn't use a tool. He uses a wet cloth to smooth it out. So you can try a small area and then if you don't like the results just give it another shot until you are happy with the finished effect.
Dig it out and re- fill it with new or use a Plastic trim.
You could try this: https://www.mollymaid.com/practically-spotless/2017/may/how-to-remove-mold-from-shower-caulk-or-tile-gro/#:~:text=Mix%3A%20Create%20a%20bleach%20solution,a%20minimum%20of%20five%20minutes.
Spray a bleach/water mixture all over the shower and let it dry. Thats the quick fix, but ideally it should be removed and re-caulked with Silicone. Here is an article I wrote on re-caulking that will help you out.
I would try to clean it first
replace it
Looks like it is time to replace it. Once the mold gets that bad it is too late to salvage. Pull out the old using a utility knife. Spray the grout under it with Dollar store mold and mildew remover. Rinse THOROUGHLY. Let dry completely. Do not use the shower for 24 hours to let the grout dry. Apply new caulking.
I would try cleaning about a 6-inch area first. If it doesn't clean up to your satisfaction, remoe the old caulk it and replace it since you have a few months until our Spring visitors arrive. A stiff brush and vinegar should do the trick of cleaning and the vinegar wil get rid of the mold/mildew.
That caulk must be removed and replaced.
remove and replace dont bother with cleaning
Ah, I do the same! You could try giving it a clean and if it's not coming up, you can replace it quite easily. Make sure you patch that crack over there between the tiles on the left too.
I had the same situation… I used straight bleach. I poured it straight down the tub surround (starting at the top). I used a LOT, making sure it was really saturated. I checked it every 30 minutes or so to make sure it was still slightly damp (using a spray bottle) where the remaining mold was still present. Took around one and half hours.
You can try cleaning it first as it is an easier job.
Give it a good cleaning and then see what you are left with. Hopefully after the cleaning you won't need to replace the caulk but can't really tell from the pic.
If ll else fails, use a Dremel to remove Grout and start again with new waterproof grout.
I'd replace it.
You can try cleaning with white vinegar and Dawn. If that does not work and the caulk is moldiing, remove and replace.
