Hi Marji I read on home talk to use one cup vinegar . It read not to leave in to long or it will damage plumbing parts. .I have not tried it yet. .that is white vinegar .Good Luck .

Shut the water off, Put in quite a bit of baking soda or Hydrogen peroxide or Boraxo. One of these. Let it set, take a sponge or a brush and use a small brush to reach parts that you can't reach with the others. VOILA! Water on, flush a few times behind it. Clean as a whistle.
