Scrub with a paste of 3/4-cup baking soda, 1/4-cup hydrogen peroxide and 1 tablespoon of mild dish soap. You can use an old tooth brush to apply the paste to your grout since it will reach any small areas.

  • Mix a half cup of baking soda, 1/4 cup hydrogen peroxide, and 1 tsp of dish soap. Apply to grout and let it work for 15-20 minutes. Scrub with an old toothbrush and rinse.

    Hi Suz,

This is my favorite way to clean the grout:

Mix Powdered Oxygen Bleach With Water

Combine the powdered oxygen bleach with water to form a paste similar to the consistency of toothpaste. Normally this requires a ratio of about two parts powdered oxygen bleach to one part water.

    Apply the Paste

Use a sponge to apply a coat of the oxygen bleach paste to the grout lines. Let the paste sit on the grout for 5 to 10 minutes. Make sure to use rubber gloves when handling the mixture.

    Scrub the Grout Lines

Scrub the grout lines using a stiff grout brush. You should quickly see the grout brighten to its original color, and any bits of mold or mildew melt off.

    Rinse the Paste

Rinse away the paste with clear water, then wipe the tile down with a clean cloth. Let the tile air-dry overnight before resealing the grout.

I use the Awesome product from the dollar store, it is basically the same formula as Oxyclean at a fraction of the price.

I used toilet bowl cleaner for some super nasty grout. Lysol in the black bottle. Then I sealed it again and it has stayed clean.

For regular maintenance, I mop with 1 cup baking soda + 1 cup white vinegar + 1 Tbsp blue Dawn + 2 gallon HOT water.

If the grouting is worn off/down to the extent that there is no more sealant left on it, then no amount of scrubbing will get it to look 'like new' clean, or will keep it clean looking for long before it begins to absorb soaps, dirt, etc.

If the suggestions for cleaning as given by other Hometalkers above, do not maintain the cleanliness of the grouting, it may very likely need to be resealed again.

  • I use my steam cleaner first, to loosen the dirt, then I scrub it with warm water, vinegar and a toothbrush. Never use bleach it will yellow your grout.

Hi Suz, we used to deep clean the grout by hand once a year, but it was such a painful process. Then I saw this video that uses a drill set on low speed - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=flfAc_jMzvM. It makes it so much easier

I just bought a grout pen from Amazon and painted the grout on very badly stained grout that wouldn't come clean. I tried cleaning it with bleach and a scrub brush but nothing worked. The grout paint was the answer!! https://amzn.to/3smY0VN
